When I first saw the ideas for this shoot, I was all over it. The colour scheme was bold, glam and screamed of Vegas. The suppliers list, was like a who’s who of the best in the area and the venue among the elite barn venues in the country. What was there not to like… Well nothing actually, this was going to be insane.
And so it proved, only it wasn’t just the shoot that was insane but the weather too. I mean it snowed, then it sleeted, then it rained and then it rained some more whilst at all times blowing a whoolie of an icy wind. To have even got everyone to Low Hall was a success in itself, to get the pictures we did was amazing and to get featured in Coco weddings on Valentines day was the icing on the cake.
For the camera geeks amongst you, you’ll notice a distinct change in lighting. Half the indoor images are lit using continuous artificial lighting and the later images using direct flash. A new trend, that mimics the 1950’s early flash photography. I can’t say I’m totally sold on it. And though it has always had some level of a place in fashion photography, it is a technique I was always taught to avoid. Now 15 years later it’s perhaps become a rule to break?? In my opinion it doesn’t really do much for storytelling, the background is non descript and you certainly cant’t compose an image with layers to it. But can you make an image that kind of has the hall marks of an old school polaroid?…. yes. Do your subjects look good?…. yeah . And does it look good in a high key black and white?…. Well that’s a hell yeah. So maybe it will be just a fad, will it replace last years motion blur… I for one, am hoping so. Will I be using it this year?… I can’t see it being my go to, but it more than certainly will have its place.
A big thank you to an amazing suppliers list
